CYB813 – Advanced Topics in Cybersecurity Management

As students approach the conclusion of the course, they need to begin to connect with the broader cybersecurity community, including commercial trends and current research. This      unit will cover advanced topics in cybersecurity management drawn from the latest research studies in the discipline area. Key topics include the role and function of the Chief Information Security Officer or CISO, outsourcing cybersecurity functions, the relationship between organisational structure and function in cybersecurity, assessing risk of unorthodox business assets, conducting red-team cyber exercises and developing specialised capabilities such as intelligence management to support decision-making.

Learning Outcomes:

• Critically examine and reflect on the multifaceted role and function of the cybersecurity leader in contemporary organisations
• Compare, contrast and critically analyse the impact of diverse organising structures for cybersecurity on contemporary organisations
• Identify, describe and critically reflect on the limitations of traditional asset identification methods when assessing cybersecurity risk
• Critically analyse the role of intelligence in supporting cybersecurity operations in organisations
• Describe and critically analyse the role and practices of outsourcing in cybersecurity
• Describe the role and practice of red/blue/purple teaming in organisations and critically reflect on the utility of red teaming practices for cybersecurity
