CYB101 – Introduction to Cybersecurity

Protecting information and IT infrastructure from complex and evolving cyber threats is a critical challenge for modern organisations. This unit introduces students to the impact of cyber threats and attacks on organisations and on the community. It also explores the vulnerabilities that exist in modern day systems and platforms. It is an introduction to cybersecurity fundamentals including concepts of authentication, access control, network security, accountability and cutting-edge cybersecurity issues that are faced by society. The unit prepares students for the acquisition of more in-depth knowledge and skills throughout the broader course of study. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define and explain fundamentals of cybersecurity including concepts of authentication, access control, network security and accountability for real-world systems 
  • Assess and describe the impact of cyber threats to organisational systems and networks 
  • Identify, assess and illustrate vulnerabilities of modern-day systems and platforms 
  • Identify and apply choice of cybersecurity tools and techniques to safeguard contemporary cybersecurity systems and networks
