CYB808 – Cyber Privacy, Policy, Ethics and Law

Given that organisations are now under increasingly sophisticated cyber-attack, the role of policy and legal oversight on cybersecurity issues has recently come into focus. This unit covers policy and legal challenges in responding to breaches, surveilling employees, coordinating internal communications, organising insurance cover for incidents, and assessing the impact of incidents on regulatory changes and commitments. Other related topics covered in the unit are ethical hacking, privacy principles and cyberwarfare.

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify, discuss and critically reflect on privacy principles in the context of individuals, organisations and society
  • Discuss and critically reflect on the role of ethics in cybersecurity in the context of individuals, organisations and society
  • Identify, describe and critically reflect on the intersection between cybersecurity and geopolitics in the context of international law, specifically self-defence and proportionality
  • Analyse and critically reflect on the interdisciplinary implications of national-level policy on cybersecurity in the context of individuals, organisations and society
  • Discuss and critically reflect on cybercrime and how it affects individuals, organisations and society
  • Discuss and critically reflect on the role of law enforcement in mitigating the risk of cyber-crime
